Performing Lab:

Referral Laboratory

Patient Preparation:

1. Instruct the patient to void at 8 A.M. and discard the specimen.
2. Then collect all urine including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24-hour collection period in the plastic urine container.
3. Transport the specimen promptly to the laboratory.
4. Label the container with the patient's full name, date and time the collection started and date and time the collection finished.

Container Type:

24 hour plastic urine collection container with no preservative

Urine, 24-hour collection
Alternately, a pour-off sample from a 24 hour urine collection is acceptable but the client must measure the 24 hour urine volume and indicate the volume on the requisition.

10 mL

Frozen - 14 days

Room temperature - 7 days

Unacceptable Condition:

Incomplete 24-hour collection; original container with pH <2.
