Collection Procedure:

1. Centrifuge the specimen with the stopper in place at 3000 rpm for 5 minutes to separate the plasma from the cells. 
2. Keep the specimen anaerobic (do not transfer) and send at room temperature in the plasma gel tube.
3. Label the specimen appropriately.
4. The specimen must arrive within 5 days of collection.
5. The tube must remain capped and anaerobic until analysis.

Unacceptable Condition:

1. Green top (sodium heparin) and grey top (sodium fluoride) tubes are unacceptable.
2. Hemolysis will falsely lower the ionized calcium result.
