Citrate, 24 Hour Urine

Plastic 24 hr urine container with 30 mL 6N HCL preservative
Specimen Type:

24 hour urine collection. Alternately, a pour-off sample from a 24 hour urine collection is acceptable but client must measure 24 hour urine volume and indicate the amount on the requisition.

Preferred Volume:
10 mL
Minimum Volume:
2.5 mL
Collection Procedure:

24 Hour Urine Collections:
1. To begin collection, empty the bladder and discard this urine. Record this time and date as the start of the collection.
2. 24 hour urine collections should be started Sunday through Thursday.
3. Collect all urine excreted during the next 24 hours in the urine collection container.
4. Exactly 24 hours after the collection was begun, empty the bladder for the last time. Add this urine to the 24- hour urine container. The collection is finished.
5. The container should be refrigerated during and after the 24 hour collection period until it can be brought to Saint Luke’s Regional Laboratories.
6. The container must be labeled with the patient's full name and date and time collection started and finished.

Specimen Processing:

1. Enter volume in Beaker.
2. Preservative is not necessary during the collection but should be added to urine collection within 24 hours. 
3. Final pH must be 1-3. 
4. Measure and record on the request form the 24 hour total volume and send 25 mL aliquot to the laboratory.  Alternately, the sample may be frozen without added acid.

Unacceptable Condition:

Samples in which there is unpreserved specimen that has not been frozen, or Acetic or Boric Acid has been used as the preservative will be rejected.
