Culture, Body Fluid with Gram Stain

Body fluid
1. Submit a screw-capped sterile container of body fluid aspirated using aseptic technique.
2. Label the tubes with the patient's full name, date of birth, identification number, date and time of collection, initials of the person collecting the specimen, and the specimen source.
3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
4. The specimen source is required on the request form for processing.

87077 - Aerobic identification (if appropriate)
87184 - Susceptibility studies, disk method (if appropriate)
87186 - Susceptibility studies, microdilution or agar dilution (if appropriate)
No growth at 4 days (aerobes).
No growth at 3 days (anaerobes).
If positive, bacteria will be identified and clinically significant aerobic isolates
will have susceptibility testing performed.
Critical value (automatic call-back): Positive
This specimen source is not routinely cultured for anaerobes. If the specimen is collected and transported anaerobically (eg. anaerobic transport vial or capped syringe), a C ANA "Culture, Anaerobic Bacteria" may be ordered for anaerobe culture.
