Gentamicin, Peak, Serum or Plasma

Information concerning dosage, dosage schedule, other antimicrobials given concurrently, and date and time of draw are required on the request form for processing.
Serum or plasma
1. A peak specimen is usually drawn 30 - 60 minutes after completion of infusion of an intravenous dose or 60 minutes after an intramuscular or oral dose of gentamicin.
2. Separate the serum or plasma from the cells within 1 hour of collection.
3. If testing is delayed more than 2 hours from the time of specimen collection, then the serum or plasma needs to be frozen until tested.
4. Indicate the sample type (serum or plasma) on the request form and the specimen.
