Patient Preparation:

1. It is suggested that the patient follow a special high carbohydrate (150 g) diet for 3 days prior to this test with unrestricted physical activity.
2. The patient should be instructed to fast, preferably ten (10) to sixteen (16) hours prior to the start of collection.

Collection Procedure:

Using guidelines established by the National Diabetes Data Group for Oral Glucose Tolerance Testing (OGTT), draw the specimen as follows:
1. During the collection period the patient should remain inactive, and receive nothing by mouth (including tobacco). Water or ice is permissible.
2. Draw blood from the fasting patient.
3. After a fasting specimen is collected, the patient will drink 75 g glucose loading dose. Ingestion should be completed within 10 minutes. 
4. Draw blood at 1 hour and 2 hours and, if ordered, 3 hours after ingestion of the dose. 
5. Spin down, separate the plasma from the cells as soon as possible after the draw.
6.  Label the specimens appropriately (corresponding draw time).
