Collection Procedure:

1. The patient does not need to be fasting for this test but should remain inactive and receive nothing by mouth (including tobacco) during the collection period. Water or ice is permissible. 
2. The patient will drink a 50 g glucose loading dose. Ingestion should be completed within 10 minutes. 
3. Draw blood 1 hour after ingestion of dose. 
4. Spin down, separate the plasma from the cells as soon as possible after the draw, and send the plasma.

Notes:

1. Screening for gestational diabetes should be done at 24 to 28 weeks gestation, at any time of day, without regard to previous meals.
2. It is recommended that a positive gestational diabetes screening test (≥ 140 mg/dL) be followed up by a "Glucose Tolerance Gestational (100 G Dose), Plasma."
