Patient Preparation:

No caffeine before or during the collection. Monamine oxidase inhibitors should be discontinued at least one week prior to beginning the collection.

Container Type:
24 hour plastic urine collection container with no preservative or with 6N HCL
Specimen Type:

24 hour urine collection. Alternately, a pour-off sample from a 24 hour urine collection is acceptable but client must measure 24 hour urine volume and indicate the amount on the requisition.

Preferred Volume:
10 mL of urine from a 24 hour collection
Alternate Specimens:
HCL is an acceptable preservative if required for a concurrently collected test.
Minimum Volume:
2.5 mL
Collection Procedure:

Patient Instructions:
1.  Void at 8 a.m. and discard the specimen.
2.  Then collect all urine including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24 hour collection period.
3.  Label the container with patient's name, date and time started and the date and time the collection finished.
4.  Refrigerate the specimen during the collection.
5.  Record the 24 hour total volume on the request form.
