Tracy Stevens, MD, cardiologist and Medical Director of Saint Luke's Muriel I. Kauffman Women's Heart Center, is working to challenge a long-standing misconception: that heart disease is primarily a man's problem. It's not.

Indeed, heart disease is the number one cause of death for women in the United States, accounting for more deaths than all forms of cancer combined.

This American Heart Month, Dr. Stevens sat down with The Trenton Telegraph to explain the unique symptoms and risk factors women face when it comes to heart disease.

She also shares tips for heart disease prevention and early detection, including monitoring your blood pressure and advocating for health.

"Be your own advocate," she said. "Know your numbers. Pay attention to your symptoms. And don't be afraid to speak up if something doesn't feel right."
