Advanced treatment for structural heart issues

Our cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons specialize in repairing structural heart disease, including congenital and acquired defects involving the heart’s valves, walls, chambers, or muscle.

A leader in pioneering safer, more effective treatments, Saint Luke's Structural Heart Program participates in dozens of clinical trials each year. The advanced skillsets of the multidisciplinary heart team allows Saint Lukes to offer patients the most advanced treatments available for structural heart issues.

  • The first in the region and among the first 20 U.S. hospitals to perform transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
  • Among the nation’s first hospitals to perform transcatheter mitral valve edge-to-edge repair (MTEER)
  • A leader in developing left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) and the region’s first hospital to offer this procedure
  • A long track record of participation in clinical trials which allows patients access to the newest technologies

The Saint Luke’s difference

Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute provides the full spectrum of care—from prevention to adult heart transplants. The team has one goal: to get you healthy and back home.

Our structural heart experts offer patients convenient access to advanced procedures and clinical trials under one roof.

You will have full access to our board-certified physicians who are subspecialists in their respective areas of cardiology. Because many of our physicians have completed advanced fellowship training, Saint Luke’s can offer patients treatment options that they often can’t find elsewhere.

Mid America Heart Institute's cardiovascular surgical program is the first and only organization in the region to be recognized by the Mitral Foundation for its commitment to mitral valve repair as an alternative to mitral valve replacement. The Mitral Valve Repair Reference Center Award assures patients that our experienced surgical team strive for superior clinical outcomes guided by data-driven oversight from a highly respected health organization.

Advanced procedures

Our heart experts have been instrumental in pioneering the latest minimally invasive, catheter-based treatments for structural heart issues. We offer the full range of procedures including:

  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR): Patients with severe aortic stenosis can be treated safely and with a quicker and easier recovery than with open heart surgery.
  • Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO): Patients with atrial fibrillation who are at risk for stroke may be candidates for this procedure which allows patients to safely stop their blood thinners.
  • Transcatheter mitral or tricuspid valve edge-to-edge repair (MTEER or TTEER): Patients with mitral or tricuspid valve regurgitation who are not ideal candidates for open heart surgery may benefit from a catheter-based procedure.
  • Transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement (TPVR): Patients with a failing pulmonary valve who aren’t candidates for open heart surgery might benefit from this transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement option.
  • Minimally invasive surgery uses small incisions to access the heart, typically resulting in less pain and quicker recovery.
  • The region’s referral center for complex surgical patients for open heart surgery, when minimally invasive procedures are not an option.
