The difference between life and death can be CPR
Saint Luke’s North Hospital and NRAD partner in community CPR push
Sudden cardiac arrest is the number one killer of Americans 40 and older. Every day, more than 1,000 people suffer sudden cardiac arrest outside a hospital. Of this, only 11 percent will ultimately survive. However, with early bystander CPR and use of an AED (automated external defibrillator) the rate improves to 38 percent.
The difference between life and death can be made by performing CPR and it’s now easier than ever to learn and know for your loved ones and neighbors. If it was up to you, could you save someone’s life?
Saint Luke’s North Hospital and the Northland Regional Ambulance District (NRAD) are partnering to offer free monthly hands-only CPR classes in Platte City and Smithville. Hands-only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an "out-of-hospital" setting and consists of two easy steps: calling 9-1-1, and pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest.
Class attendees will learn CPR in less than an hour. Additionally through the partnership, CPR trainers are available to present this valuable education to area groups. Everyone can help make their community safer by learning how to save a person’s life with CPR.
"Together we know how important this mission is to improving the outcomes of sudden cardiac arrest," said Scott Roy, executive director, Northland Regional Ambulance District. "The more people who know to push hard and push fast, the more lives we can save in our community."
