Dos Mundos: Baby of Recently Arrived Immigrant Graduates from NICU

Saint Luke’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is celebrating a special graduation. A baby boy born 10 weeks early to a recently arrived immigrant mother was discharged from the NICU after 73 days there.

“It’s exciting to be able to watch that mom and baby go out together and start their next chapter,” said Danielle Gathers, NICU nurse manager.

When Neivis Robaina Torres arrived in Kansas City on a humanitarian visa, she didn’t think she would be immediately admitted to the hospital. But her health deteriorated throughout her journey from Cuba to Kansas City, which included traversing Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico.
