Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital FAQs
Did Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital close?
Yes. Due to the significant financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we made the extraordinarily difficult decision to close Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital.
The following primary and specialty care clinics remain available in the Cushing Medical Plaza building, located at 1001 6th Avenue:
- Saint Luke’s Primary Care–Cushing
- Saint Luke’s Cardiovascular Consultants
- Saint Luke’s Endocrinology Specialists
- Saint Luke’s Orthopedic Specialists
- Saint Luke’s Surgical Specialists
- Saint Luke’s Regional Laboratories Patient Service Center (lab draw station)
Why was the decision made to close Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital?
Closing Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital was never our intent. In fact, we made substantial investments in Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital over the past several years to improve services and enhance facilities.
In 2019, we launched a new model for Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital that focused on emergency services—the area of greatest need within the Leavenworth community—as a way to set Cushing on a sustainable and successful future path.
We were only a few months into this new model when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Like health care organizations everywhere, we stocked up on resources and staffed up on people to prepare for a surge in cases. This increased expense came at the same time we had to defer elective procedures. These factors resulted in significant financial strain and ultimately led to the decision to close Saint Luke’s Cushing Hospital.
