Advanced Treatment for Heart Valve Disease

Saint Luke’s is the region’s leading valve program, repairing and replacing more heart valves than any other hospital.

Saint Luke's Valve Center

As the only Joint Commission-certified valve center in Kansas and Missouri, Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute offers the latest surgical and less invasive treatment options for heart valve disease.

Our specially-trained cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons are supported by an expert team of nurses and researchers.

Treatment Options

Heart valve disease treatment depends on how severe your condition is. Your Saint Luke’s cardiologist may suggest monitoring your condition with regular follow-up appointments and taking medications to treat symptoms.

However, you may eventually need heart valve surgery to repair or replace the diseased valve. Options include a less invasive procedure to repair certain valves using a catheter to repair the mitral valve or surgically implanted valves, a program that we successfully started in 2015.

If open heart surgery is not the preferred option to address a damaged aortic valve, a less invasive procedure called transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) may be an option. Our heart valve team helped pioneer the TAVR procedure in 2008.

In more severe cases, Saint Luke’s cardiothoracic surgeons may perform a surgical heart valve replacement. The surgeon removes the damaged valve and replaces it with a mechanical valve or a tissue valve.
