Advanced Treatment Options

While there is no cure for Parkinson’s, essential tremor, or other movement disorders, there are several advanced options including Duopa and deep brain stimulation, for managing your symptoms.

  • Asleep Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) – While you’re comfortably asleep under general anesthesia, we’ll place tiny electrodes into specific regions of the brain to send intermittent electrical impulses that interfere with abnormal brain activity after surgery. Patients experience relief from symptoms of movement disorders. Saint Luke’s is among an elite group of hospitals that pioneered asleep DBS surgery. We are one of the nation’s most experienced asleep DBS providers and were the first in Kansas City to perform this surgery.
  • Duopa – This device gives a continuous infusion of levodopa for Parkinson’s patients. It allows delivery of the medication directly into the small intestine, helping prevent absorption problems that occur in the stomach. With this device, patients receive a continuous infusion, taking fewer pills throughout the day, and eliminating periods where medications can begin to wear off.
  • Botulinum Toxin – Our team offers injection to control abnormal movements in dystonia patients and minimize drooling in Parkinson’s patients.
