Clinical Forensic Care Program Hosts International Visit to Address Human Trafficking
Saint Luke’s Health System’s Clinical Forensic Care Program is proud to be part of international efforts aimed to stop human trafficking. The program hosted a visit this month with delegates from all over the world who are specialists on the issue of human trafficking.
The visit, which took place March 8 at Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, came at the request of Global Ties KC.
Global Ties KC links prominent international leaders—including business, government, and non-profit professionals—with their local counterparts. Through professional meetings, school visits, events, and home hospitality they connect people from around the world with citizen diplomats in western Missouri and the state of Kansas.
Goals for the March visit included allowing the delegates to study post-sexual assault patient care and improving community collaboration efforts related to sexual assault education and prevention.
Saint Luke’s Clinical Forensic Care Program provided each delegate with the forensic supplies the team uses for evidence collection. Delegates also received access to resources including “A National Protocol for Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Examinations Adults/Adolescents Second Edition” and the education guidelines for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Education and Training, as defined by the International Association of Forensic Nurses.
Program leaders reviewed specific policy, procedure, jurisdictional differences, collaborations, and local challenges. The delegates were most interested in hearing about Trauma Informed Care (TIC) Approach. TIC is a thorough understanding of the profound neurological, biological, psychological, and social effects of trauma and violence on individuals receiving care from first responders and the legal system. Discussion included how prosecutors can use this technique to improve the outcomes in court proceedings.
Kathryn Miner, MD, Denise Mogg, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, and Jennifer Green, BSN, BA, RN, SANE-A, hosted the event and were joined by other local leaders.
The delegates also visited other Kansas City programs, including:
- Legal Aid of Western Missouri
- U.S Attorneys Office, Western District of Missouri
- Jewish Vocational Services
- Office of U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri)
- FBI
- University of Kansas Anti-Slavery and Human Trafficking Initiative
- Willow Domestic Violence Center
