KSHB: Doctors Say 3D Mammograms Help Catch Cancer Early
One in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. The American Cancer Society estimates more than 268,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2019.
Catching breast cancer early is crucial. Angela Swain discovered she had breast cancer early on after getting a 3D mammogram at Saint Luke's North Hospital and now encourages her friends to get screened.
"2D mammography is like looking at the cover of a book, while 3D mammography is like looking at individual pages," said Dr. Kelsey Flynt, a breast radiologist at Saint Luke's North Hospital.
KSHB talked to Dr. Flynt about how 3D mammograms play a key role in early detection.
