FOX4: Metro woman finds priceless relief from chronic migraines through Botox injections
More than four million people have chronic migraines, with at least 15 migraine days a month. Angela Florez used to be one of them until she came to Saint Luke's Pain Management Specialists.
Angela started having painful migraines after she was hit by a drunk driver in 2016. Her pain became so intense, she had to go on FMLA and take time off work from her job as a school service coordinator for a local nonprofit.
"When you deal with chronic migraines, you can isolate yourself and dismiss yourself from work and just other regular activities and leisure, and it's tough dealing with that," Angela said.
But Dr. Jennifer Elliott, a pain management physician at Saint Luke's, offered a different option for Angela--relief through Botox injections. The treatment option is typically covered in full by insurance.
"People were getting these Botox injections done for cosmetic procedures and they started to report that they noticed that their headaches were better," Dr. Elliot said.
That's because Botox paralyzed something called the neuromuscular junction between the nerve and muscle so that that nerve doesn't contract, thus treating the migraines.
