Unique challenge: The one thing that never changes in health care is that there is continuous and often rapid change. From technology to industry regulations, to how we engage with patients and communities, we must be prepared to always learn, adapt and make the best possible decisions based on the most complete information we have, always with patients’ best interests at heart. The pace and demands are challenging, but it is deeply rewarding to collaborate with our teams and our peers.
Advice for aspiring CFOs: Keep a sense of humor, and always keep in mind the importance of translating the complex into simple. We handle intricate and complex details, and at the end of the day, people affected by our work need a clear understanding of how any given topic affects them. People are always at the heart of what we do.
Distinguishing characteristic: Saint Luke’s Health System continuously highlights its culture of kindness, and I believe this is one of the reasons this organization has been such a natural fit for me. Respect, kindness, empathy and listening to others are always at the foundation of what I do, and I believe that helps build strong, lasting and trusting professional relationships.
Little-known fact: I have run every day since Dec. 31, 1995. I am a life member of the United States Running Streak Association, and I am ranked 86th in the world in terms of the length of active running streaks. The longest current active streak started May 26, 1969.
Guilty pleasure: I’ve been a Chiefs season-ticket holder for decades. I look forward to the new season every year and have already started counting down the days this year.
