Kansas Reflector: Kansas Hospital Officials Say New Criminal Penalties Needed to Deter Patient, Visitor Violence
Violence in hospitals against nurses, doctors, and other staff has risen over the past decade. Health care personnel are five times more likely to experience workplace violence than people in other industries.
Representatives of Saint Luke’s Health System, along with other area hospitals and Kansas law enforcement organizations, came together to urge the Kansas Legislature to approve a bill creating new crimes of interfering with a health care worker.
Elijah Thompson, Director of Security at Saint Luke's Health System, explained what health care workers are experiencing and why stronger penalties are needed.
