Lung Cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related death in the United States. But only around 18% of all those eligible were screened in 2022, according to the American Lung Association.

During a 2023 checkup at Saint Luke’s Primary Care in Lee’s Summit, Bill’s nurse practitioner suggested he get a low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening based on his smoking history to rule out the possibility of cancer.

Cali Horton, a 21-year-old student from Blue Springs, was a survivor from day one.

Her mother, Heather Horton, was pregnant with twins and diagnosed with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome—uneven blood flow between twins sharing a placenta. Both twins, Cali and her sister Kara, were born prematurely and spent three weeks in Saint Luke’s neonatal intensive care unit.

As a result, Cali suffered from a rare vascular malformation of the brain, which required radiation treatment at age 2. Over time, the treatment fully cured her malformation.

Anthony Weatherspoon, 68, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, remembers it like it was yesterday: The day he wasn’t feeling very well in 2024. “I didn’t know what was up,” Anthony says, with his wife, Peggy, at his side.
