Employee Gives Back to Honor Her Care Team

Meghan Geivett has her life invested in Saint Luke’s. Not only does she work for Saint Luke's—she’s a long-time employee working for the quality training team—but she also owes her health to the Saint Luke’s team.

Meghan was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer just a few weeks after her 40th birthday, but she was fortunate that doctors detected the disease early. Successful treatment was more likely in the early stages, and Meghan knew exactly where she wanted to get that treatment. She’d seen first-hand how Saint Luke’s cared for patients.

"These are very special people on our oncology teams who can work with someone who’s scared to death. I felt very blessed to be a witness to that kindness,” she said, remembering the chaplain who checked in on her, and the people who made a surprise visit to play guitar and sing for patients receiving chemotherapy treatments.

A couple of years later, Meghan is doing great, and it’s important to her to give back so that Saint Luke’s, as a not-for-profit organization, can continue to offer superb care.

"I remember so many patients’ faces and stories from over the years, and think, ‘I want to do something to help a person like that,'" she said. "I think a lot of employees think that way. It’s that overall mentality we have at Saint Luke’s, of taking care of people. I want to put my money back into the services we render.”

Although her experience with cancer strengthened her commitment, she’s been donating to Saint Luke's since 2005, when her manager first introduced her to the idea. She’s passed on that spirit of giving to people she’s worked with, and to her own family. A couple of times a year, each member of the family is allocated $25 to donate to a cause they believe in.

Her contributions go both to Saint Luke’s Foundation and to Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute. 

"We can do it all at Saint Luke’s, and it’s amazing. I want to help us continue to do groundbreaking research for our patients,” she said. “I know I’m not only helping patients in our community, but I’m also helping our employees. I want to support the people
who supported me.”

People like Meghan allow Saint Luke’s to continue our work for the Kansas City community, and we are grateful. Thank you, Meghan!
