KMBC: Spike in cases of broken heart syndrome linked to COVID-19 pandemic
Over the pandemic, doctors are seeing a 500-fold increase in cases of broken heart syndrome. It's a life-threatening condition brought on by stress, also called cardiomyopathy.
Jessica Love, who is now a nurse practitioner at Saint Luke's, suffered this condition five years ago when she was in school and preparing for her boards.
KMBC talked to Love and Dr. James O'Keefe, preventive cardiologist at Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute, about why there has been such a spike over the past year.
