Patient Preparation:

Patient should fast for 12 hours and abstain from alcohol for 24 hours prior to collection. Blood should be collected before breakfast in the morning and prior to any medication.
For patients younger than 6 months, draw prior to the next feeding.

Plain red top or serum gel tube

Serum (protected from light)

Preferred Volume:
0.7 mL
Minimum Volume:
0.4 mL
Specimen Processing:

1. Transfer the serum to an amber plastic transport tube.
2. If amber tubes are unavailable, cover a standard plastic transport tube completely, top and bottom, with aluminum foil. Identify the specimen with the patient's name directly on the container AND on the outside of the aluminum foil.
3. Secure with tape.

Frozen - 14 days
Refrigerated - 14 days

Unacceptable Condition:

Specimens not protected from light, hemolyzed samples or samples other than serum will be rejected.
