Specimen Type:

Urine from a 24 hour collection (no preservative required). Alternately, a pour-off sample from a 24 hour urine collection is acceptable but client must measure 24 hour urine volume and indicate the amount on the requisition.

Preferred Volume:
100 mL
Alternate Specimens:
24 hour urine collected with 1 gm boric acid per liter of urine or HCL as a preservative
Minimum Volume:
10 mL
Collection Procedure:

24 Hour Urine Collection:
1. Instruct the patient to void at 8 a.m. and discard the specimen.
2. Collect all urine including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24 hour collection period in a plastic bottle.
3. Screw the lid on securely.
4. It is acceptable to collect cortisol with boric acid or HCl preservative.

Specimen Processing:

1. A 24 hour urine volume is required when ordering.
2. Enter the total volume in the HLAB prompt.
