Creatinine Clearance, Serum or Plasma and Urine

Performing Lab:
Saint Luke's Regional Laboratories
Patient Preparation:

24 Hour Urine Collection:
1. To begin collection, empty the bladder and discard this urine. Record this time and date as the start of the collection.
2. 24 hour urine collections should be started Sunday through Thursday. 
3. Collect all urine excreted during the next 24 hours in the urine collection container.
4. Exactly 24 hours after the collection was begun, empty the bladder for the last time. Add this urine to the 24 hour urine container. The collection is finished.
5. The container should be refrigerated during and after the 24-hour collection period.

Container Type:
Serum gel tube or green top (heparin) tube AND entire 24 hour urine collection (NO PRESERVATIVE) or pour-off bottle
Specimen Type:

Serum or plasma AND urine are required for this test. Blood must be drawn during the 24 hour urine collection period. Entire 24 hour urine collection.
Alternately, a pour-off sample from a 24 hour urine collection is acceptable but client must measure 24 hour urine volume and indicate the amount on the requisition.

Preferred Volume:
1 mL serum or plasma AND entire 24 hour urine collection (or pour-off sample)
Minimum Volume:
0.5 mL serum or plasma AND entire 24 hour urine collection (or 20 - 25 mL if a pour-off sample is submitted)
Collection Procedure:

1. Indicate the specimen type on the request form.
2. Label the specimens appropriately.

Specimen Processing:

Starting and ending times of collection are required on the request form for processing.

Store and Transport:
Refrigerate urine; keep plasma or serum at room temperature
