Cryofibrinogen, Serum and Plasma

Container Type:
Plain red top tube and lavender top (EDTA) tube
Specimen Type:

Serum and plasma  are required for this test.

Preferred Volume:
2.5 mL each of serum and plasma
Minimum Volume:
0.5 mL each of serum and plasma
Collection Procedure:

1. Collect blood and immediately place the tubes in a 37 °C water bath for one hour.
2. Centrifuge at 3000  rpm for 10 minutes. Do not use a refrigerated centrifuge.
3. Immediately transfer the serum and plasma into individual stoppered, plastic tubes and centrifuge again at 3000 rpm for 10 minutes. 
4. Transfer the serum into 2 screw-capped plastic vials (each containing 2.5 mL serum).
5. Transfer the plasma into 2 screw-capped plastic vials (each containing 2.5 mL plasma).
6. If unable to centrifuge, forward unprocessed whole blood (minimum volume 10 mL for each tube) to the laboratory promptly at room temperature only.

Specimen Processing:

1. Indicate the specimen type on the request form.
2. Label the specimens appropriately.

Stability:

Unspun specimens must arrive within 2 hours of collection.

Unacceptable Condition:

Gel tubes are not acceptable.
