Collection Procedure:

1. Submit tissue collected by the physician during surgery.
2. Place the specimen in a screw-capped, sterile vial.
3. Label the vial with the patient's full name, date of birth, identification number, date and time of collection, initials of the person collecting the specimen, and the specimen source.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
5. The specimen source is required on the request form for processing.

This specimen source is routinely cultured for anaerobes. Gram stain is routinely performed.
Reference Ranges:

No growth at 4 days.

If positive, bacteria will be identified and clinically significant aerobic isolates will have susceptibility testing performed.
