Fecal Occult Blood, Diagnostic (non-neoplasm screening)

Performing Lab:

Patient Preparation:

1. For 7 days before and during the stool collection period, avoid non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin (more than 1 adult aspirin a day.)
2. Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) can be taken as needed.
3. For 3 days before and during the stool collection period, avoid vitamin C in excess of 250 mg a day from supplements and citrus fruits and juices.
4. For 3 days before and during the stool collection period, avoid red meats (beef, lamb, and liver).
5. Eat a well balanced diet including fiber such as bran cereals, fruits, and vegetables.

Required Patient Info:

Indication:

1. To evaluate known or suspected alimentary tract conditions that might cause bleeding into the intestinal tract.
2. To evaluate unexpected anemia.
3. To evaluate abnormal signs, symptoms, or complaints that might be associated with loss of blood.
4. To evaluate patient complaints of black or red-tinged stools.

Collection Procedure:

1. Collect a random stool specimen on pre-inoculated Hemoccult® SENSA® Slides (Test Cards) supplied or a fresh stool specimen collected in a small, random stool container.
2. For optimal diagnostic value, it is recommended that multiple specimens be collected at least 24 hours apart.
