Patient Preparation:
1. A 12 hour fasting specimen is preferred, but not required.
2. The patient should abstain from alcohol for 24 hours.
3. The patient should be off all medications for at least one week.
4. If clinically inappropriate to discontinue medications, include a list of medications with the specimen.

Collection Procedure:
Protect the plasma from light.
Specimen Processing:
1. The plasma should be separated from the cells within 2 hours of collection.
2. Send the plasma in a plastic transport tube.

Frozen
Unacceptable Condition:
Gel tubes are not allowed.
