PYRUVIC ACID

Pyruvic Acid, Blood

EPIC Test Procedure Code: LAB3285

Performing Lab:
Referral Laboratory
Patient Preparation:

The patient should be in a fasting and resting state (no exercise).

Container Type:
Gray top (sodium fluoride) tube
Specimen Type:

Perchloric acid supernatant from oxalated whole blood

Preferred Volume:
0.5 mL (clear supernatant)
Minimum Volume:
0.2 mL (clear supernatant)
Collection Procedure:

* STEPS 2-9 PERFORMED BY THE REFERENCE LAB *
1. Draw blood in a chilled gray top tube, send to the Reference Lab on ice STAT.
2. Immediately after the blood is drawn, add 2 mL of whole blood from the gray top tube to 2 mL of 8% perchloric acid. If less blood is obtained, use equal parts blood to 8% perchloric acid (1:1 ratio).
3. Shake the mixture vigorously for 30 seconds.
4. Refrigerate for 5 minutes to ensure complete protein precipitation.
5. Centrifuge 5 - 10 minutes at approximately 1500 xg. A second centrifugation of the supernatant may be necessary to obtain a clear protein-free solution.
6. Immediately transfer the clear supernatant to a plastic transport tube. Label the transport tube as "supernatant". Refrigerate the perchloric acid supernatant.

Store and Transport:
Refrigerated
Stability:

Frozen - 7 days
Refrigerated - 7 days
Room temperature - 5 days

Unacceptable Condition:

Gray top tubes not prepared with perchloric acid and whole blood specimens will be rejected.

CPT Codes:
