RENINP

Renin

EPIC Test Procedure Code: LAB3254

Performing Lab:
Referral Laboratory
Patient Preparation:

No isotopes should be administered 24 hours prior to venipuncture.

Container Type:
Lavender top (EDTA) tube
Specimen Type:

Plasma

Preferred Volume:
1 mL
Minimum Volume:
0.8 mL
Collection Procedure:

The patient's posture at the time of collection should be noted.

Specimen Processing:

1. Keep the EDTA tube at room temperature and centrifuge immediately at room temperature.
2. Transfer the plasma into a screw cap plastic transport tube, freeze immediately, and maintain frozen until tested.
3. It is critical that the plasma be transferred and frozen as quickly as possible to prevent cryoactivation of protein to renin (which results in falsely elevated renin levels).

Store and Transport:
Frozen
Stability:

Frozen - 14 days
Refrigerated - unstable
Room temperature - unstable
Freeze/thaw cycles Stable x 3

Unacceptable Condition:

Non-frozen sample received; non-separated sample received; non-EDTA plasma specimen; gross icterus.

CPT Codes:

84244 - Renin Activity (EAP 30020524)

Method:
The renin in plasma is allowed to act on the plasma's endogenous substrate, angiotensinogen producing angiotensin I. This is measured by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS)
Reference Ranges:

Please refer to the performing lab report for applicable reference ranges

Notes:

To avoid delays in turn around time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.
