Norge Winifred Jerome Youth Mentorship Program

Many teens in Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City Crittenton Children’s Center’s residential and foster care programs don’t have strong family or other positive adult resources. Mentors can fill that role.

Studies show that children who have positive role models are:

• Less likely to start using drugs or alcohol
• Less aggressive
• More likely to attend classes
• Stronger in relationships with peers
• More self-confident

Mentors provide emotional support and act as role models. Establishing a trusted relationship as a friend and being able to listen are the most important things a mentor can provide.

We encourage weekly visits, whether to help with homework, play games, go on approved off-campus outings, or just hang out and talk. Teens need someone who will listen. These moments are essential to help teens develop the life and social skills they need to thrive as adults.

Expected characteristics of a mentor:

• Works well with teens
• Positive attitude
• Patience
• Effective communication and listening skills
• Maintains confidentiality at all times

We require all prospective mentors to undergo a background check and complete training. Mentors must stay in regular contact with a therapist/case manager, at least monthly, to share any information or concerns. Mentors must be at least 21 years of age.

Opportunities to Volunteer

We offer a variety of activities that can take place in individual or group settings and on an ongoing or short-term basis, depending on the activity. 

• Tutoring
• Playing games, reading, etc. 
• Organizing donated clothing
• Filing, copying, data entry, sorting, etc.
• Welcoming and escorting visitors to units 
• Sewing
• Gardening
• Making cards
• Hosting a special event (game day, holiday/theme party, etc.)
• Sharing a special skill (music, sewing, juggling, dance, craft, drama, etc.)
