MEDIA COVERAGE: Saint Luke's Crittenton Children's Center hosts "ROCK IT!" to help build stronger families in Kansas City
Saint Luke’s Crittenton Children’s Center hosted "ROCK IT!", a free, fun event to build stronger families. Rock It! provided fun hands-on activities for all ages, toddlers to teens, and featured great strategies for parents. Union Station Festival Plaza was filled with areas where families could learn and took home some amazing resources to use with their kids. ROCK IT! featured different tents throughout the event – including Reading, Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Active Lifestyle, and Healthy Eating, and twelve hands-on interactive tables were families could learn different strategies to help with the day to day. At each tent families could be interactive with games and items were available for families to use in their everyday life.
The event featured two stage shows put on by Sesame Street favorites Elmo and Rosita, and Kansas City native and YouTube sensation, Michael Stevens, Vsauce performed two stage shows.
Saint Luke’s Crittenton Children’s Center has been helping the families in our community and surrounding areas overcome difficult times and traumatic events for over 120 years. Crittenton is proud to be a partner with Sesame Workshop to help build stronger families in our community. Sesame Workshop, the non-profit educational organization behind Sesame Street, recently launched its first-ever comprehensive initiative designed to help children cope with traumatic experiences. The initiative is a major new addition to Sesame Street in Communities, a program to help community service providers, parents, and caregivers give children, especially the most vulnerable, a strong and healthy start. Kansas City is one of three pilot communities for Sesame Street in Communities and is integrating into the citywide effort to build a resilient and trauma-informed community for every child and family in Kansas City and surrounding areas.
Traumatic experiences and resulting toxic stress can disrupt a child’s brain development and increase the risk of both short-term and long-term physical, social, and emotional issues. However, children are remarkably resilient, and the effects of traumatic experiences can be lessened if they receive comfort and support.
