Fecal Occult Blood, Colorectal Neoplasm Screening
EPIC Test Procedure Code: LAB2766
1. For 7 days before and during the stool collection period, avoid non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin (more than 1 adult aspirin a day.)
2. Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) can be taken as needed.
3. For 3 days before and during the stool collection period, avoid vitamin C in excess of 250 mg a day from supplements and citrus fruits and juices.
4. For 3 days before and during the stool collection period, avoid red meats (beef, lamb, and liver).
5. Eat a well balanced diet including fiber such as bran cereals, fruits, and vegetables.
Indication:
Done for the purpose of screening for colorectal cancer in the absence of signs, symptoms, conditions, or complaints associated with gastrointestinal blood loss.
1. Collect a random stool specimen on pre-inoculated Hemoccult® SENSA® Slides (Test Cards) supplied or a fresh stool specimen collected in a small, random stool container.
2. For optimal diagnostic value, it is recommended that multiple specimens be collected at least 24 hours apart.
