Culture, Wound with Gram Stain

Performing Lab:

Container Type:
Sterile syringe, ESwab,sterile vial
Specimen Type:

Fluid or tissue

Preferred Volume:
10 mL fluid or 2 g tissue
Collection Procedure:

Collect specimen as follows:
1. Remove surface exudate by wiping area with sterile saline, iodine or 70% alcohol.
2. Aspirate if possible or pass a swab deep into lesion and firmly sample lesion collecting a specimen from advancing margin or base.
3. Place specimen in an ESwab collection/transport system.
4. Label container with 2 patient identifiers, date and actual time of collection,     and specimen source.
5. Do not refrigerate.
6. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.

Note:  Specimen source is required on request form for processing.

Test Schedule:
Monday through Sunday
Test Includes:
Gram stain is routinely performed.
Reference Ranges:

No growth at 3 days.

If positive, bacteria will be identified and clinically significant aerobic isolates will have susceptibility testing performed.
