Patient Preparation:

1. The patient must avoid all seafood for 72 hours prior to collection.
2. Avoid contact with metal during collection.

Container Type:
Plastic 24 hour urine container or plastic urine cup (for random collection)
Specimen Type:

24 hour urine collection (no preservative) or random urine collection.
Alternately, a pour-off sample from a 24 hour urine collection is acceptable but client must
measure 24 hour urine volume and indicate the amount on the requisition.

Preferred Volume:
5 mL
Minimum Volume:
2.5 mL
Collection Procedure:

If collecting a 24 hour urine:
Instruct the patient to void at 8 A.M. and discard the specimen. Then
collect all urine including the final specimen at the end of the 24
hour collection period.

Specimen Processing:

The total volume of the 24 hour collection should be stated on the test
request, or entered in the HLAB prompt, if applicable.
