NEWBORN
Newborn Screen (Missouri)
EPIC Test Procedure Code: LAB2403
1. Place infant's limb in a position to increase venous pressure (heel lower than heart).
2. Warm heel for 1-2 minutes to increase blood flow, cleanse puncture site with 70% isopropyl alcohol, wipe dry with sterile gauze.
Print all information requested on form. Press hard using a ball point pen.
Initial Newborn Screening Blood Spot Card collected between 24-48 hours of life is considered optimum for newborn screening.
Repeat Newborn Screening Blood Spot Card for all subsequent specimens collected from the infant.
1. Perform puncture using sterile lancet with tip not longer than 2.0 mm.
2. Wipe away first drop of blood with dry sterile gauze.
3. Allow second, larger drop of blood to form.
4. Gently apply filter paper to large drop of blood. Allow blood to soak through and completely fill preprinted circle. Apply blood to one side of filter paper only.
5. Fill circle with single application. Do not layer successive drops of blood. An incompletely filled circle is unsatisfactory for testing.
6. Fill all five circles.
Allow blood spots to thoroughly air dry for 3 to 4 hours in a horizontal position, away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not allow blood to touch any surface during drying, including other parts of the card.
All specimens should be sent to the State Public Health Laboratory within 24 hours of collection.
Layered or clotted blood, Circles that aren't completely filled.
