A new landmark study evaluated the different improvements in life expectancy associated with participation in various sports. The findings show that the best types of exercise for improving life expectancy are social sports that involve playing with friends.
“We know from other research that social support provides stress mitigation,” says Dr. O'Keefe. “So being with other people, playing and interacting with them, as you do when you play games that require a partner or a team, probably has unique psychological and physiological effects,” he says, amplifying the benefits of the exercise.
