Common Genetic Counseling Questions
What is hereditary cancer?
Although most cancer risk is not inherited, some cancer occurs because of one’s genetic makeup. Having a mutation in particular genes can increase the risk for a number of different cancers, including but not limited to breast, ovarian, endometrial, and colorectal.
How do you determine if you are at risk?
Individuals with a strong family history of cancer or who have a personal history of cancer at a young age may consider scheduling a genetic counseling appointment to identify possible additional cancer risks for themselves or their families. To take an assessment to see if you should pursue testing, please visit our site.
Will my genetic test results be kept private?
Federal regulations including GINA (Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act) and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) provide protection against discrimination and the lab will not release results to anyone other than the provider ordering the testing unless you provide permission.
Will insurance cover the cost of the test?
Over 95% of insurance plans will cover the cost of testing for qualified patients. Please contact your insurance provider for more details.
