Infants requiring hospitalization in an intensive care nursery following birth are often at higher risk for developmental delays and may benefit from follow-up care provided by developmental specialists. Ideally, their development should be evaluated early and often so potential problems can be identified and referrals to the appropriate sources made as soon as possible.
The Children’s SPOT (Speech, Physical, and Occupational Therapy) at Saint Luke’s Hospital offers a developmental screening program designed to periodically assess high-risk infants over their first two years of life. Using a team approach, a speech pathologist and occupational or physical therapist conduct screenings at approximately 6, 9, 15, and 21 months of age to determine if developmental milestones are being achieved within age-appropriate timeframes.
Screenings typically last 30 minutes. Families are given immediate feedback regarding their child’s development and offered general stimulation activities to do at home.
Referrals are also made to appropriate follow-up and therapy resources as needed.
Eligibility
Any infant discharged from the intensive care nursery at Saint Luke’s Hospital is eligible for a developmental screening. Those identified as high-risk are automatically referred. Other babies may be screened if recommended by their pediatricians.
