Kansas City Business Journal: Saint Luke's South Nears Opening Rehabilitation Institute

Saint Luke's South Hospital is in the final stages of construction on a 100,000-square-foot rehabilitation hospital set on the same campus as the 125-bed acute care facility.

Saint Luke's Rehabilitation Institute, which broke ground in December 2017, will wrap up construction in July and begin admitting patients in September. The 60-bed facility includes inpatient and outpatient services, multiple gyms, an outdoor rehabilitation garden and model apartments to practice navigating a home-like environment.

The facility will also include a number of robotic devices to help patients recover. The institute is designed not just to help with orthopedic injuries, but also patients who suffer from brain or spinal cord injuries, stroke, arthritis, and cardiovascular issues.

"Technology is one thing, but it's not everything," said Reagan Simpson, President of Saint Luke's Rehabilitation Institute. "We also run a lower ratio of patients to staff than is typical, which allows you to do individual one-on-one therapy all day every day, and that's not the norm in the market or in the country."
