Saint Luke’s recognized on U.S. News and World Report’s 2020-21 Best Hospitals List
U.S News and World Report announced their 2020-2021 Best Hospital rankings. The rankings, now in their 31st year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients.
Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City ranks No. 2 in Missouri, No. 2 in the Kansas City metro area, and is recognized among the Best Hospitals in northwestern Missouri.
“It is such a great honor to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report as providing some of the best care in the nation. This recognition shows the commitment and dedication of our Saint Luke’s physicians and nurses, and other professionals who bring the highest level of care to patients in our community day in and day out,” said Julie Quirin, Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President of Saint Luke’s Health System. “We are especially proud to have the Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute once again recognized as one of the best programs in the nation for cardiology.”
This year, Saint Luke’s cardiology and heart surgery specialty jumped significantly in its ranking from no. 42 to no. 22 in the nation.

For the 2020-21 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 16 specialties, 10 procedures, and conditions. Only 3% of hospitals ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized best regional hospitals based on high performing rankings across multiple areas of care.

Across the Saint Luke’s Health System, 14 specialties are ranked as high performing.
The Saint Luke’s Hospital ranks as high performing in four specialty areas:
- Gastroenterology & GI Surgery
- Geriatrics
- Neurology & Neurosurgery
- Orthopedics
The following specialties are rated at Saint Luke’s Hospital as high performing in Common Adult Procedure and Condition:
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
- Aortic Valve surgery
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Colon cancer surgery
- Heart bypass surgery
- Heart failure
- Lung cancer surgery
- Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
Saint Luke’s East Hospital was rated high performing in the following Common Adult Procedure and Condition:
- Heart failure
- Knee replacement
Saint Luke’s South Hospital was rated high performing in the following Common Adult Procedure and Condition:
- Heart failure
- Hip replacement
Kansas City Orthopedic Institute was rated high performing in the following Common Adult Procedure and Condition:
- Hip replacement
- Knee replacement
The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely or entirely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.
