KMBC: New study shows loneliness can increase the risk of heart disease
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women. A new study in the journal of the American Medical Association shows that loneliness can increase your risk of heart disease.
Researchers looked at more than 57,000 women aged 65 and older. For those experiencing both loneliness and isolation, the risk increased by as much as 27 percent.
Dr. Tracy Stevens, a cardiologist with Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute, says it makes sense because those are both forms of stress which can lead to inflammation.
