Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute to Open Comprehensive Cancer Program at Saint Luke’s North Hospital
Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute, a department of Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, today announced the formation of a new Comprehensive Cancer Program on the campus of Saint Luke's North Hospital–Barry Road. The expansion of Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute will provide the growing Northland community with access to the most advanced, personalized cancer treatments close to home.
Expected to open in Spring 2025, the Comprehensive Cancer Program will include radiation therapy services and expanded medical oncology and infusion services in the Barry Medical Park Office Building adjacent to the main hospital.
“With the Northland’s significant growth over the past decade, the community has a need for easily accessible, comprehensive cancer care,” said Darren Bass, DPT, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer of Saint Luke’s North Region. “With all services provided on one campus, patients will benefit from the full range of Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute’s services and experts without having to travel to multiple locations.”
Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute provides the full continuum of care from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship. Patients have access to the latest investigational treatments through industry and National Cancer Institute-supported clinical trials, as well as physician researchers in gastrointestinal, thoracic, neurology, breast, and other cancers.
“Cancer treatment and outcomes continue to improve because of this key research,” said Timothy Pluard, MD, medical director of Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute. “Saint Luke’s screens all patients with cancer for clinical trial availability and offers personalized treatment plans for each patient, including access to precision oncology expertise and support services for their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.”
Saint Luke’s Health System provides access to more than 200 cancer clinical trials for patients, with additional trials planned through a collaboration with Siteman Cancer Center, which is based at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
Features of the Comprehensive Cancer Program will include:
- Radiation therapy: The new radiation therapy suite will have a state-of-the-art linear accelerator capable of providing the most accurate and precise radiation treatments available. Therapies include conformal modulated therapy, which is delivered in half the time or less than conventional radiation treatment; 3D external multi-beam therapy; intensity modulated radiation therapy; and stereotactic body radiation therapy.
- Medical oncology and infusion: The Saint Luke’s Cancer Specialists–North clinic will have an expanded footprint with additional clinic and infusion therapy space to accommodate more patients. The Saint Luke’s Hospital Infusion Center’s new treatment area will offer 15 infusion bays.
Saint Luke’s North Breast & Imaging Center will remain in its current space, conveniently located on the same campus. Existing oncology services at Saint Luke’s North, including breast surgery, colorectal surgery, genetic counseling, and cancer rehabilitation will complement the Comprehensive Cancer Program.
