Specialty Care through telemedicine
eHealth allows Saint Luke’s specialists to treat patients in rural areas who otherwise would not have local or timely access to specialty care. Seeing a specialist by telemedicine is much like a typical doctor’s visit. Patients visit an actual office or clinic. A nurse sets up the audio/video system and connects with the remote doctor through a two-way monitor.
The doctor gives instructions and makes observations while the nurse provides on-site assistance. Cameras, microphones, and digital stethoscopes allow the specialist to listen to the patient’s heartbeat and lungs, examine skin, and look into the eyes, ears, nose, and throat. Patients and their tele-specialist are able to speak as normally as they would in person. Consultations are completely private and secure–only those in the exam room or on the video screen are able to hear or see the patient.
