KCTV: Empowering heart health in women
The first Friday of each February, which is Heart Month, is National Wear Red Day to empower women to take ownership of their heart health.
Heart disease the number one cause of death in women, but many wrongly assume it's only older women who are at risk.
KCTV talked to Dr. Tracy Stevens, cardiologist and medical director of Saint Luke's Muriel I. Kauffman Women's Heart Center, about risk factors for women in this week's Aging in Style segment.
"There are conditions that carry a higher risk of heart attack and stroke, especially in women," Dr. Stevens said. "If one had high blood pressure during pregnancy, diabetes during pregnancy, that raises their risk later in life. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome, autoimmune disorders, inflammatory disorders can make them at risk as well."
